Turns out it’s kinda weird watching yourself on TV.
I didn’t sleep at all the night before the Beauty and the Geek premiere. I stayed up late packing and tried to grab a couple hours of shuteye before my airport shuttle arrived at 4 am, but with no success. I stumbled my way to the gate, where I devoured a breakfast burrito that was way more delicious than any combination of salsa, eggs, and potatoes should have been that early in the morning.
I spent most of the the flight back to California half asleep. By which I mean that I alternated between fully asleep and fully awake as my seatmates, Mr. and Mrs. “I have a bladder the size of a kumquat but I still find it necessary to drink a cup of coffee every five minutes”, squeezed past me to use the bathroom over and over again.
So I was still slightly stupefied when I finally got together with a few friends to watch the show. That may be part of why it didn’t feel real. It still doesn’t feel real. It felt like watching a home video with a bunch of friends, except that I came home afterwards to discover an unusually high number of friend requests on Myspace.
There hasn’t been much character development yet, but the little pieces they’ve shown captured us pretty accurately for the most part. (Tori had a bit of a rough episode, unfortunately. She’s still an awesome person in my book.) It’ll be interesting to see what the future holds. For my part, people are already asking me if I was playing up the geekiness. Which makes me laugh, because I thought I came off a lot cooler than I expected.
I wish they showed more of the standup comedy! There’s a lot of stuff from the house that I still don’t know about – I’m going to have to wait to see it on TV, too. That includes everyone’s standup routines. I’ve heard Mario’s, and most of Nate’s, and I know what got bleeped out of Paio’s (hahaha, I’m actually surprised they were able to air as much of his as they did). But Scooter’s routine remains a mystery.
And of course all one-on-one interviews with the camera were kept private. So no one knows for sure who was backstabbing who until the episode actually airs. So much drama. I can’t wait for next week!

Am definitely curious but can’t see you – no TV. Bastard burglars. And I guess because I’m in the UK, I probably couldn’t see it either.
Any chance of a weblink?

Man, I missed it… busy working and couldn’t make it to the viewing party.
I’m gonna have to see this sometime though. No matter what anyone says, I know you don’t have any trouble geeking it up, pootchy wookins.
Ha, it’s also weird watching someone you went to college with on TV. I think you came off fairly cool except for the immediate attempt to explain the…cognitive radio? Even I couldn’t totally follow it, especially because they started screwing with the audio halfway in. In any case, I always thought you were pretty cool and not that socially inept, so you’re doing well.
It must be weird seeing the one-on-one interviews now, especially because of all the bad first impressions.
Anyway, saw your response comment in the last post. I’ll send you an e-mail. I do have a car, and I can also BART. A couple friends of mine, Kelsey and Ravi, were also surprised to find out you were on the show as well.
niels, congrats on starring in beauty and the geek! i still can’t believe someone i know is on tv. the first episode was awesome. i didn’t know you worked on cognitive radio, it’s full of engineering goodness. for some reason i want to wish you good luck on the show, even though everything has been taped already. anyway, good luck, i hope you win!

p.s. do you know what paio said exactly? there were too many bleeps to make out anything unfortunately…
Aw too bad, I don’t get to see it. I’m in New Zealand and we’ve only had the first season – I’m sure we’ll get your season in, I don’t know, 2009!
All the best, hope you get represented fairly!
My friend and I were watching the premiere and we think you’re the cutest on the show!
Actually my favourite part was when you were explaining your graduate research to Jennylee and she seemed all confused – but sadly I think I actually understood what you were describing because I am a CE myself.
I hope you win and meet your beauty!!!
I watched it.
So, why didnt u run game on the chicks in the house?
whats the deal with that?
