On Saturday, I went to what could have been a Pearl Jam secret show. The Showbox here in Seattle was advertising a show featuring “Harrybu McCage, featuring Matt Cameron of Pearl Jam”. A quick Google search revealed that Harrybu Mccage didn’t really exist, though the opening bands did, so we hoped it was actually a Pearl Jam secret show.
Walking in, the venue was nearly empty. Apparently it was a very secret secret show. As the night went on, though, some hardcore Pearl Jam fans did begin to show up, as hopeful as we were.
As it turned out, Harrybu Mccage did in fact exist, and played a strange jazz-electronic-drumming-noise set that was very very much not Pearl Jam. And in my humble opinion, was very much not… good. The high point of the evening was the palpable air of disappointment and the crestfallen looks on every single person’s face. It’s not often that I get to see so much disappointment in one place.
The night ended well, though, as we headed to friend’s birthday party, where I happened to run into other people I met at the Bellevue Fashion Week event I snuck into (three months in Seattle and my social circles are already intersecting?!), through whom I met the guy (Bay Raitt) who coded Gollum’s face for Lord of the Rings who also happens to be both friendly and hilarious and thus I finished the night eating chocolate ice cream cake at 3am with a bunch of strangers.

I was at the concert and it was wonderful! The trio played originals and some far- out versions of Monk standards. Furthermore, when I went outside for a minute, I overheard several people commenting on the quality of the musicianship. I understand YOUR disappointment, as you obviously expect Matt Cameron to stay in his Pearl Jam box, however the music was really innovative (
although way too loud for my tastes). Go buy some jazz and educate yourself!
Dude, you suck! They did it for free too it was a benefit.
Perhaps we can agree that a listener’s tastes would have to be significantly more sophisticated/educated/informed than mine in order to fully appreciate the musical stylings of Harrybu Mcccage.
The show was great!! Harrybu McCage is a full on jazz band. Matt got to prove what a pure BADASS HE IS ON THE KIT!! They were jamming out some funky ass jazz. The bass player played this beautiful stand up bass….and just whaled on it!!! And the keyboardist was really talented as well. They were very a very tight little jazz band. And then, for their encore after Matt said a few words, they played a few covers, and if I remember correctly they were; “Time Is on My Side” (written by Jerry Ragovoy (under the pseudonym of Norman Meade)), “Highway Star” (Deep Purple), and then I think a Chili Peppers song from Blood Sugar Sex Magik, but I can’t remember which one.
Surface Tension was the first band and they were pretty good. Windowpane (2nd band) and Iris I (last band) were very talented as well. Surface Tension, Iris I, and Windowpane were all rock bands and they rocked out GOOD!!! Everyone who was there had a blast!!
Another great night at the Showbox FOR SURE!!!!!
They even had a raffle – they gave away a sweet pair of bongos and an acoustic guitar!!! Along with an ass load of t shirts and a few microphones. I didn’t win anything, but I thought it was way cool they did that.
