Harry Potter’s out! I wasn’t really a fan of the other movies, but this one had a pretty awesome preview. I am excited about the book, though.
The apartment is coming together. We have a couch, an armoire for my computer, we’re going to be building a big-ass beanbag, and Craig is still fighting me on the stripper pole. Can’t wait.
Been going out with friends all week. It’s amazing how much time you have when you don’t have a job, or at the very least no homework. My evenings are free! What a fantastic concept.
I’m trying to spend my days learning marketing, but it’s tough when the weather is so beautiful. It’s cool, though, I figure I can tolerate a few weeks of drudge work to get the ball rolling on my own business. Look for a website redesign in the next few months…
A few days ago, a friend explained a fascinating, painless technique he uses to learn languages. Everyone suggests learning languages by watching foreign movies, but he’s broken it down in a really interesting way. First, watch the movie with subtitles on, a few times, until you really grasp what’s going on. Then watch it without subtitles. THEN, turn the movie on in the background while you go about your daily business – washing dishes, packing, doing laundry, etc. Listen to it in the background over and over. Eventually, your mind will pick up on the sounds and start replaying the movie in your head, and you’ll connect the dialogue with the meaning. It’s almost as good as osmosis! A friend recently recommended the movie Diva, perhaps it’s time to work on my French?
I appreciate fine ice cream more than I appreciate fine wine. I look for artisanal ice creams and flavors everywhere I travel. I easily ate over $100 worth of gelato during my week in Italy. So trust me, the ice cream at Maison Berthillon in Paris is good.
So good that the first day I went I got two scoops, walked down the street, turned back and bought another two. So good, that the next day I walked through the pouring rain to get another three. And so good that I’ll be thinking about the Chocolate Gianduja Orange for a long, long time. The rest of the diverse selection of flavors (by diverse, I mean they don’t just have Caramel. They have Caramel, Salted Caramel, and Ginger Caramel) are fantastic, but the Gianduja Orange is the best ice cream I’ve ever had.
The ice cream was so good that I came back home and went on the internet to see what else I’ve been missing. And discovered Bi-Rite Creamery in San Francisco. To think, I almost left the bay area without tasting their ginger ice cream! That would have been a tragedy.
Bought a DC-to-AC power inverter/adapter so I could plug in my laptop and spent my drive to Seattle listening to all the podcasts/seminars/training CDs that I’d wanted to get to for months. The twelve hours flew by! I actually feel like yesterday was one of the most productive workdays I’ve had in a while.
And now that my stuff is unpacked – I’m going to crash. Have a happy fourth of July!
Thirteen hours, Berkeley to Seattle. Today is the first day of the rest of my life. New apartment, new job, new social circle. I’ll be moving back in with my college roommate and embarking on a new career. I’ll stay in touch with San Francisco friends, but right now, it’s time to get my career handled. I’m going into business for myself. Beyond that, details are fuzzy.
